PĀNUI TO OUR WHANAU – Retirement of Academic Director Erica Weullington

Erica Wellington.
The Board advises that Erica Wellington has retired from her position as Academic Director of the education unit.

Erica has held a senior management role for Ngatiwai iwi since 2010. During that time she has worked in the iwi strategy for education and has participated in the design and implementation of the Ngatiwai Trust Board’s strategic goals for education.

In 2014 Erica joined the Ngatiwai Trust Board’s new subsidiary, the education unit, to implement the existing education strategy and to assist in providing academic leadership for the Board’s new venture, registering a new Private Training Enterprise. In 2015 Erica was appointed to manage the education unit including the new PTE.

In her time working for the iwi, Erica has been part of a team of 26 part time and full time employees to deliver projects involved with improving Maori achievement at all levels throughout the education sector. These projects have included, among others, Science Mentoring for Maori secondary students; production of books and educational resources; research into preventing youth suicide among Maori; professional development for early childhood and primary teachers in culturally responsive pedagogy; positive parenting workshops; goal setting and coaching for learners on a whanau based model; modelling and teaching te reo and tikanga classes for age groups from pre-school to the very elderly; pastoral care and mentoring for Maori tertiary students.

The iwi has benefited greatly from Erica’s time working for the education unit. The Trust Board joins the staff and our iwi members in wishing her well in her next role.
