Te Tohora – \”Te Kowhiti\” – Stranded during COVID-19

Such a privilege and honour to be with our Tohunga Hori Parata and his amazing team that he has shared his matauranga around the mahi of Whale Flensing and all the associated tikanga and processes that goes along with that.

The team of Hori Parata, Te Kaurinui Parata, Poai Neha, Blake Te Kata, Jaycee Tipene-Thomas, Sylvia Wano, Aotea Parata, Ngariki Ngatai, Melissa Brown and Christopher Haika completed the Flensing of a Tohara that stranded in a remote beach just around from Ngahau Bay in Whangaruru. The Tohara stranded during COVID-19 level 4, and it is only today that the team have been able to assemble to complete this kaupapa.

The conditions and weather were perfect for this difficult mahi, and with the taonga having been lying here for over 5 weeks, to say the smell was ripe would be an understatement……tino haunga!! You can\’t smell it through these pictures.

Blake, Te Kaurinui, Jacycee have worked on over 30 whales with uncle Hori, with the Taranaki strandings being a significant kauapa in time for this team a couple of years ago that Poai and Sylvia were of part of too. Now with their experience and guidance of Uncle Hori, the team were quick on the knives on a beautiful winters day to get the mahi tahi done.

Karakia can protect and safeguard the spiritual wellbeing of people, so our homes and our whānau remain well. Mā te karakia e hipoki te wairua kia ora tonu te kainga. Indigenous knowledge is an underutilised resource, all too often excluded from injury prevention. Click here to learn more
